Stanford researchers have released Proto, an open-source framework that lets businesses combine over 120 specialized AI biology models that were previously incompatible. While technically aimed at researchers, the tool has immediate applications for small businesses in cosmetics, food production, and natural products who want to design better ingredients. Previously, using AI to design proteins, optimize fermentation, or improve natural compounds required weeks of technical integration work. Proto provides a shared language that lets these models work together seamlessly, dramatically reducing the time from concept to prototype for biology-based products. Small producers developing specialty foods, skincare, or bio-based materials can now access the same computational biology tools that large corporations use, potentially accelerating product innovation and reducing expensive lab trial-and-error cycles.
